Is there anything better than a fresh from heaven newborn? My parents were here for a whole week after Ada came and I can't even tell you how much I loved having their full attention on me. Hmmm.... I'm just realizing that's probably where Rory gets it from. Shoot. I've been blaming Stephen this whole time. Anyways, having them here to help out was everything I hoped it would be and more.
My recovery from this delivery was a lot quicker than Rory's, though it wasn't bad the first time around either. I felt like I was able to get around pretty well very quickly, but the awesome thing about having my parents there meant I had no where to be! Stephen and my dad did a little bit of golfing before Stephen had to head back to work. He only took one week of his paternity leave right after she was born so that he could save his other week for our Disneyland trip in September. My dad golfed, bought us yummy food, and took Rory to the pool to keep her busy every day. My mom took Rory out on special Grammy dates, did a lot of shopping for us once again, and ended up taking some beautiful newborn photos for us. My parents are just the best.
I had to make sure I got a picture to show off Ada's luscious baby locks. When she was born, Stephen and I were both like, "What?! She has so much hair!" The nurse holding her at that point was like, "Really?" and Stephen answered, "Well, it's a ton compared to our other daughter." The nurse sweetly replied, "Your other daughter must have been pretty bald." Stephen and I unanimously said, "Yep!"
I love the picture of Rory setting up her baby doll to take pictures of her just like Grammy. She was very serious and intent about her project, and if only she actually had a camera I'm sure they would have turned out lovely. My mom was able to take Rory to her dance class while she was in town, which was something I was so excited for her to do. Rory is still learning the ropes of dance class, but boy does she look cute in her little leotard and tutu. And when Grammy runs out to get Bosa donuts to eat after class? Well, that's just icing on the cake! Or maybe the donut. Mmmmm... now I'm hungry.
Rory's reaction to Ada was interesting. From the very first moment in the hospital, she seemed pretty excited about her. I was glad I had read some advice on Pinterest first and had someone else hold Ada when Rory came to visit so that she and I had some time together. Rory was still pretty excited when we came home with Ada. She got a Frozen Play-doh set "from Ada" and that gave her a pretty good second impression of the baby. It wasn't long before she realized that this baby took up a lot of the attention that used to be reserved for only Rory. She started poking her, pinching her, and even biting her early on. To take the newborn pictures of the two of them together was a bit of a gamble because when Rory would lean in you never knew if it was going to be for a kiss or a bite. And you never knew if it was going to be a slight lean to reach the baby, or a quick drop to pressing all her weight down on top of her. She gets excited to hold the baby, but when she is done she means DONE and you have to be right there to grab Ada because Rory will push her right off her lap. It's a learning process for all of us!
With her head full of dark hair, we felt like Ada had a complete different look from little baby Rory. Stephen kept double checking with me that this was, in fact, his baby. In an effort to bond with her despite his questions, he recommitted to his role as baby napper extraordinaire and wasted no time in showing Ada the ropes around here.
When my parents finally left, it was a tough adjustment to life on my own with two. Luckily Ada still slept most of the day, but every time she needed to nurse Rory felt the attention turning away from her and she would not stand for it. We started doing shows, iPad time, and special toys during feeding times that seemed to help a bit. Finally, four weeks after Ada was born, Rory started showing her some love. She brought all her blankets and best loved toys to put on her bouncer so that she would be cozy and have something to play with. I know eventually she will be so grateful to have a sister and I look forward to the day that I can leave the two of them alone in a room together for even a minute. Bulk up quickly please, sweet Ada!
One day about a week after my parent left, I was nursing fully exposed, and the doorbell rang. I wasn't expecting anyone and so I decided to just let Ada finish her feeding and I could figure out who it was later. When I finally went to my door there was a note that I had missed a delivery from Crumbl Cookies (which is my favorite thing on the planet, hot fresh cookies delivered to your door!). Instead of just leaving my cookies at my door, they left a note that I needed to go pick them up at the store. So I loaded up the girls and headed off to get my cookies- this may have been our first outing with all three of us, can't really remember because I wasn't sleeping much. When I got there, I showed them the note that was left at my door. They asked what kind of cookies I ordered and I said that I didn't and someone else must have sent them to me. They told me to just pick out the flavors I wanted and handed me a box of cookies. I was so sad to not know what someone had picked out for me, or if they had written something for me on the card! I put this picture out to instagram and my friend Marisa said she had sent them to congratulate me on the new baby but that she was mortified I had to leave my house with my kids to pick them up since that is the opposite point of sending someone baked goods. All in all, the cookies were worth it and yes I ate most of them by myself.
